How to choose a retractable awning

Every home is different, so you will need some help in deciding how to choose the right awning for your outdoor living space. Every home will need a different width and projection but the first thing to establish is the type of installation that’s required.

Two-story installs

These types of awnings are installed into the brick or siding of the 2-story home. Typically, you will need a hood to protect the gears that retract your unit. A Primasol is a good option because they roll up into a cassette.

Bungalow installs

You need at least 8’2” to install an awning. Without this minimum height clearance, you cannot properly enjoy an awning since it would be too low for people to safely walk under. This means there are two options for bungalows.

Soffit installation

In this type of install, we cut into the soffit to install rafter brackets. The brackets hold the cassette and the unit rolls underneath the soffit.

Roof-mount

This is probably the least attractive but necessary if you don’t have the 8’2” clearance or have enough room in your soffit. In a roof mount, the brackets are installed on top of the roof of your bungalow.

Tips on how to choose an awning

  • In windy areas, Primasol is recommended.
  • Consider which way your backyard is facing for the best installation location.
  • For homes with western exposure, the sun will set on an angle and the awning may not provide you shade depending on the time of year.
  • Shade plus is a fabric that rolls down on the end of the awning (projection side) to give you the extra protection (in case you have western exposure)

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions by our customers:

How long do retractable awnings last?

It depends on how much you use your unit but typically the frames last over 15 years. A Monarch awning has a 5-year warranty whereas a Primasol awning has a 10-year warranty.

How far can a retractable awning extend?

While you may be able to order custom sizes, the furthest projection of our units is 13’1” and you can buy units up to 25 feet wide.

How do I close a retractable awning?

For units less than 14 feet wide a hand crank is acceptable. For units 15 feet or more a motorized crank is recommended (people struggle to crank 20 feet awnings). All awnings can be motorized. In addition, we offer automatic controls such as a remote, and sun and wind sensors.

Can retractable awnings be used in the rain?

All of our awnings offer protection from the rain and are 100% waterproof. They are the perfect solution for staying outside on rainy days.

How much clearance is needed for a retractable awning?

A minimum of 8’2” is needed to install a retractable awning. This ensures enough clearance for people walking underneath without hitting their heads.
